Communications Technical Rules 2018 (Type Approval)
The Communications Technical Rules 2018 (Type Approval) establish the framework for ensuring that radio equipment used in Tonga meets required technical standards. These Rules, made under the Communications Act, ensure that equipment is safe, compliant, and suitable for use within the national communications network.
Purpose of the Rules
The Rules provide for:

A clear process for certifying equipment compliance with technical standards
-
Recognition of international certification regimes

This ensures efficiency and alignment with global best practice while maintaining national standards
Register of Approved Equipment
-
Approved equipment is recorded in the Register of Type Approved Customer Equipment
-
Once approved, the same model can be imported and supplied by any person without requiring additional approvals
Existing Equipment (Transitional Arrangements post enact of this regulation)
-
Equipment already in use at the time of commencement must be submitted for type approval within a specified period
-
The Rules provide a separate process and timeline for reviewing such equipment
-
The Regulator may request additional information or samples before approval is granted
Regulatory Efficiency

Defined timelines ensure fast and predictable approvals
-
The process minimises regulatory burden while ensuring compliance
-
No additional labelling is required once equipment is type approved
